PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS
The Students Speak Out Milwaukee project kicked off with
workshops hosting students from two local schools, Web Dubois and
Community High School, as well as from a community organization,
Running Rebels.
GLOSSARY
- Futures First Initiative
- Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the
Futures First Initiative links seven high schools with
community-based organizations, local government agencies and
employment opportunities aimed to direct young people away from
gangs, violence and academic failure. Programs and opportunities
created through the Futures First Initiative include help for
students making a shift from one school to another, the development
of the new, small Transition High School and training and career
development linked to meaningful paid work.
- Milwaukee Small Schools Network
- Milwaukee Small Schools Network supports small charter schools
devoted to individual growth plans for Milwaukee Public School
students. Small school charter high schools play a vital role in
the effort to provide top quality education and safe learning
environments for all Milwaukee students.
- Running Rebels
- Since 1980, the Running
Rebels Community Organization has been dedicated to developing
Milwaukee's youth mentally, physically and spiritually. By offering
a youth program that focuses on education and recreational
activities, Running Rebels provides Milwaukee's youth with positive
alternatives to gangs and substance abuse. Programs for high risk
youth include mentoring, tutoring, crisis stabilization, anger
management, daily living skills, an after-school and summer safe
and sound program and separate programs for serious chronic
offenders and firearm offenders.
- Violence Free Zones
- Violence Free Zones are a national model for stopping violence
in schools and creating peace in the communities that surround the
schools. In partnership with Runnin Rebels Community Organization,
Latino Community Center, and the Center for Neighborhood
Enterprise, which designed the model and provides technical
assistance for the partnering organizations, Milwaukee Public
Schools sustains Violence Free Zone on seven high school
campuses.
